Kefalonia is the largest of the 7 ionian islands and is located on the north of Zante and on the South of Lefkada. The smaller island of Ithaca is located east to Kefalonia and belongs to the same municipality.
Kefalonia is sparsely inhabited with 35.000 population. During summer months the island gets many visitors mostly for the unique beaches to be found here.
Despite the fact that the island is recommended as a summer destination, nature has been very generous with it in every aspect. In a very short distance between them you will find plenty untouched beaches and not very far at all, mount Aenos, a 1650m high mountain which is officially recognized and protected for the rare flora (black spruce)& fauna (wild horses) that lives there
This part of the Mediterranean has been geologically active since ancient years and rare geological phenomena take place in the island. You shouldn't miss the Drogarati Cave, the Melissani Lake and Katavothres (Argostoli) which are connected to Karavomilos (Sami) by underground currents . Kefalonia was totally destroyed in 1953 and rebuild with the most demanding building standars and safety laws.
The island has 3 major ports and an airport. You can use public bus transportation or hire a taxi. You also have many choices of car or bike renting
